The Mitsubishi Lancer - Mirage 1.6 / 1.8 model is the first larger engine in this range as an upgrade from the 1.5 engines. The 1.6 / 1.8 engine provided a healthy improvement over the 1.5 with 76kw for the 4G92 SOHC 16v 1.6 and 86kw for the 493 SOHC 16v 1.8 depending upon your location. It can be modified extremely easily with great results. The 1.8 engine especially in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged performance will keep up with any car out there. Whilst the bottom end of this engine is a little weak for high boost turbo charging, this is easily rectified with the capabilities of extremely high horsepower.
The biggest criticism we hear about these engines is there use of the Mitsubishi Air Mass Sensor /Air Flow Sensor MAS/MAF unit (Depending upon your choice of terminology. Specific information on the air cleaner design can be found in the air cleaner section, this unit whilst it does rob of horsepower, is also responsible for allowing a lot of modifications to be done to this vehicle without forming the customary flat spots and fuel starvation problems associated with MAP (Manifold Activated Pressure) Sensor.
