Glad to hear you made the best investment in your racing future.... remember..its not a magic bullet... I like to think of the process as "a part-time job that will pay for me to go racing" ...

That's what it will entail..its a job in itself, and should be treated as a business ... lots of hours doing what it takes...so one has to committed ...

The best part of this is I now have someone I can call for motivation/direction/assistance , especially if I get "stuck" on any of the steps.. such as "public speaking"... or "how to network at a motorsport convention or show", etc.

In Jamaica it would be no different, but I think the biggest hurdle is getting the sport itself marketable to corporate Jamaica  and the drivers /club members have to step up and make that happen... do what is necessary!! No excuses !! Leaders must lead!! period!

Nope.. that is not advisable... There are cheap enough sites out there, to do it right... I have my site up now at 50 /year.. but i designed and uploaded my site... im with http://www.bluehost.com/, and there are cheap enough templates through wordpress... facebook, etc, are "traffic feeders" to website
if the driver is not tech savy (go learn it like I did), or find some one who is and work a deal

Look... our reality is we need to stop thinking of racing out of our pockets which is 99.99 percent of the time unsustainable... think RWOPM (Racing with other people money)..
Now how to get opm is what this is all about... we have to change our "old school" mind set ... we live in a "changing" economy, /world.. not a bad economy/world...so we adapt or fade away...

Stop buying into the hype "things hard everywhere"... remember in freemarket economy, somebody making money , and somebody loosing money every day,,.. poise yourself to be attractive to the ones making money, and can see value in investing in you to make more money..simple!!

Another interesting article ( read only please) ...http://www.marketingatfullspeed.com/images/class-downloads/DEVELOPING-A-PROFESSIONAL-NASCAR-DRIVER-INVESTMENT-PROGRAMS.pdf

Could something like this program  work in the caribbean ??

Just think outside the box a bit.... it has to appeal to human emotions, psychological even... may be subliminal/suggestive in background...but should have the human element for the connection.... we have drivers from all demographics/parish /gender/ age..in the club...footage from past races....capitalize on it!

Hmmm... still didnt make the connection for me, got lost after 1:20........ we need to make the drivers the stars not the cars... of all the classes... we have class champions for 5 classes in JRDC... several beautiful female drivers.. "hunk" young males (I think the ladies would say)... we had one of the most talked about movies last wweek "fifty shades of grey"... capitalize on anything .."fifty shades of speed" ..something...anything... but show people having fun at our events, show drivers interacting with the fans... etc...

How does one make the drivers the stars? ...  when simply getting drivers to submit to a professional photo shoot seems next to impossible .... http://www.jrdc.org/competitors .... Much easier to make the cars the stars from stock video/photo footage captured on Raceday ... one has to be a realist and work with what's available within the local context .... only a couple of drivers / Crew Chiefs may embrace ur marketing approach & put themselves out there ... Dolly, Hollywood, Kylus, Rae, TR perhaps

in rallying you can just use the faces of drivers and it works, jeff panton doing an event in a lada would still bring a crowd,,,,not so in circuit,,,the cars bring more people....woudnt deny though some drivers have that ability to pull a crowd

Of the numerous amount of race drivers, only a hand full make themselves availably to help the organisers promote the meet,  advertise their sponsors products and enlightened their supporters.

The organisers seldom have to arrange media interviews for the fallowing, Peter Rae, Doug Gore and David Summerbell. Most of the others are very busy people. Because of the lack of support the president has to frequent the media houses to sell the product. What some drivers is good at is to cry down the executives, if not for rule changes that is designed to suit current situations it is for more prize money.
Thank the lord for a strong team of executives or ?

That only works in F1 and NASCAR, in sportscar/GT racing , historically , the cars are always the stars , never just the drivers, be successful enuff and the drivers name become synonymous with a certain marque, but it is always about the marque.

Reality..I cant sit here and say do "X"... but I can suggest to make some basic stuff mandatory when renewing (or joining ) competition license... such as providing the driver profile and photos.... in addition to a photographer doing action shots of each driver/champion... clubs should reserve all rights for use of image and footage.. so whether they choose to do their own marketing, the club needs to theirs.

A major hurdle of motorsport not being "marketable" is due to the fact they (the clubs/promoters) dont even market themselves... how are they gonna market a sponsor image or product?? A few adds before a meet will not cut it... when they solve the riddle of why not even their own members who have successful business wont invest/sponsor in their events ....when they solve the riddle of merchandising... the riddle of having a charity cause..the riddle of community relations...

AW.."historically" is what needs to change... the mindset of all needs to change and adapt to what has/is worked for eg..F1 or Nascar... The addition a a manufacturers title is a one time spend with a major trophy , then an annual  replica to keep/ cheque to their charity of choice ...Time will add the prestige ... even though they they may not be interested/involved , build and keep the relationships alive at all time...

The clubs with no vision or goal will all fade.... the clubs with no leaders who lead from the front will fade.... the clubs who dont retool and "reeducate" will fade

Ps... ..these adds with the cars as stars... only appeal is to attract new competitors..not new fans!!

BEST OF LUCK TEAM JAMAICA...
Jamwest...nuf respect for all the hard work... Promotors..CMRC,Drags, ... keep strong. [2thumbsup]

@BigJuice ... not in total disagreement with ur roadmap and no need to exit the discussion prematurely.

A major problem may be the club format (eg JRDC, SCCA) as opposed to the private enterprise model (eg NDRC, F1, NASCAR). Each structure has its strengths and weaknesses. Clubs tend to be driven by committee, revolving leadership and volunteering .... private enterprise the opposite with strong focused leadership and the $$ motive. A hybrid may be required.

Ur solution to address low membership participation in marketing etc may have some hurdles as the local motorsports structure is fragmented  [noclue] even though many members belong to most groups resulting in less efficient use of available human resources. @Teach's "ONE SPORT" may have tried to address this fact.

  • Strong leadership may not be palatable to members
  • JRDC does not issue competition licenses so no leverage there. [wallbash]
  • Club may be reluctant to reserve right as the few photogs may take their equipment and go home  [nuke]
Within the Jamaican context the investment of time and effort will require financial gratification for most club participants ... (@Hillary pointed this out) ... even though if the club is successful the reward$ will as well. Classic Chicken vs Egg scenario.

It may just be a question of leadership in the end ...  [unsure]

No NCU live streaming.
Can't afford it.
Live streaming as it stands isnt a viable revenue source at the level that we are at.
Live streaming cost approached Ja$500,000.00. Big screen tv at Dover cost a whopper as well.
What value do these add to the financial bottom line of the club in the present?

The service is simply not handled properly for it's true potential.

Hello Racers,

Boot camps are in full swing and I am getting excited about  the launch of the new yearly programs coming out soon. There will be opportunities for racers of all ages. Todays advice blog post is a oldie but a goodie. This is very helpful information if you follow the tips given.

7 Ways to Get Spnsors to Love You and Comeback Year after Year.

The greatest compliment anyone can receive in the business world is "I just love working with you." That's especially true when that compliment comes from sponsors and marketing partners, because it means that you'll be getting them to come back year after year.

Here are the seven rules for getting companies and business people to love working with you, based upon writings of Dr. Earl Taylor, master trainer at Dale Carnegie:

1. Make building the relationship more important than making the sponsorship sale.

2. Create opportunities for the company to partner and co-promote with you, rather than opportunities for you to sell them straight-out sponsorship.

3. Have meaningful conversations with them and never give a sales pitch.

4. Be curious about the company reps you are working with as a person and let friendships evolve from that.

5. Don't try to be a hero who swoops in to solve all the companies' (sponsors) problems all the time.

6. Believe in your heart that you and your team are the best at what you do both on and off the track.

7. Deliver exactly what you promised to deliver, no matter what.

I LOVE these rules. I have lived by them for many years and I am here to tell you if you follow them I know from experience they work!

Remember to visit my website www.marketingatfullspeed.com to scroll through my advice blogs and videos to get more helpful information. I look forward to hearing from you and lets get those calls scheduled.

Let's just address this point. I thought I implied bounti and Sizzla. But let's speak specifically on this point. You are saying two PROVEN draws that are able to pull crowds just by themselves anywhere else are incapable of bringing in crowds to see them at Dover? .

Is it not more logical that too much money was spent securing their contract and not enough promoting their concert? Again different marketers market differently. There are certainly enough people in St Ann, Runaway Bay, Browns Town and Trelawny, just in geographical closeness, that I argue, would have been interested in attending a bounti or sizzla or both concert by itself. The fact that more did not turn out to see a Bounti & Sizzla concert with some free racing thrown in (see what I did there?) is a mark against the marketing choices made and the avenues chosen than it is for the proven draw power of these two artists.

Remember their main purpose was not to draw additional car enthusiasts,  they were to attract the non enthusiasts in hopes of turning them into fans while they watched the racing... in addition to entertaining the regular crowd.

For that reason, I will not say it was a bad idea to try and incorporate a stage show into the day. It was the execution that was the issue. There is a reason why the Superbowl half time show is a big a draw as it is while still serving a functional purpose of providing a break for the teams.

But it all comes down to building interest before hand and people needing to know about first and then be compelled by your message. That goes for all promotion.

BTW- The quality of the performance is irrelevant to the point I am making, so I never brought it up,  because filling the place the first time has nothing to do with the performance they received once there. HOWEVER.. the quality of the show will undoubtedly affect how future promotional marketing efforts will be received by the audience. A great show will be remembered and talked about. Constantly upping the WOW will make it a highly anticipated event.

In the case of the SuperBowl.... totally different scenario for such a half time show .... 1st and foremost, its the grand finalle to the season for the championship...2nd, ticket prices are tremendously more costly, ..3rd, the broadcasting of the event in primetime...

All season games do halftime reports and analysis from the panel of experts (past players/coaches)

Racing clubs here dont have a signature event to build around, except maybe Rally Jamaica, and I always wonder why that is so.....the Bounty move was not a bad idea, but ill timed based on budget.... think the money could have been used more wisely gearing towards getting the event on TV (as should be the main goal , which puts them in a better position to attract a major title sponsor )

I think the SPEEDwest Weekend event is being built to become that signature Circuit event going forward. If only everyone was on board to ensure a fantastic start out the gate. Maybe next year the event will be a proper "International" event for the fans and Media partners.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CX0XBxOEinY .... In hindsight ......  [ponder] [ponder] ... Sportsmax TV

That should be interesting to see how its executed... they now have 11 months to plan...the inclusion part is gonna be a tough sell, as the precedence has been set... cash payouts on one side , not looking good for the other....but I hope they do a better job negotiating and understand , it doesnt,t have to be a bigger event, just a better event.

Talks of more events at same venue by several parties is in full swing it seems, some even think the circuit side is not a viable venture...so lets see how this is all gonna shake out....

Maybe Circuit Racing can be used as a Drag Racing Event .... schedule fillers ......  2 - 3 fast laps ...  [evil]  [rofl]

Seriously .... The local promoters need to create not just a great package but a super package going forward for Motorsports fans. Under promise and Over deliver .... above some minimum standard. Fan satisfaction was Lueboyz / Skunk Nation original stated intent for the SWwknd b4 backing out of financing the event. Lets see what's in-store going forward if we can take them @ their word.

Obviously you haven't read what Dwight wrote regarding the reason they originally pulled out. It was because they couldn't get assurances of OVERSEAS participation. STOP intimating otherwise...

Just an update to add to ur perspective Mr Downes ....... re: Under promise & Over deliver 4 fans

Paying Patrons need value for their money and that is why Motorsport Events must be more diversified with the the inclusion of other disciplines to give the Patrons non stop action and excitement. Patrons must get a Show and can't wait to return to the next Event. I have always said it 2 Horse Race is not gonna work to hold the Patrons keep coming back over and over.
We have to understand with the low Stock of high competitive Circuit Cars that can run sub 1.19 sec Dover will not be profitable to the Promoters.Yes we have the other Mp1 , 2 & 3s but Patrons love to see the Top Guns.

Good article! This adds clarity and validity from corporate America that NOBODY wants to be INTERRUPTED anymore with a sales pitch. That is why I developed my Sponsor Attraction System(tm) which is completely designed to teach PULL marketing strategies that ATTRACT the fans and sponsors TO you. An Investigation Into Professional Athlete Philanthropy:
Why Charity Is Part of the Game

The professional sport industry in North America
has increasingly focused on social responsibility over the
past 10 years and sport philanthropy has emerged as a key
element of these activities (Babiak & Wolfe, 2009; Sheth
& Babiak, 2010; Sports Philanthropy Project, 2007). In
this industry, professional sport executives are increasingly
becoming concerned with the image and public
perception of their teams and, as such, reaching out to
the communities in which they operate (Armey, 2004).
Athletes are an important resource that professional sport
teams use to both make an impact on a social issue and to
garner positive associations for themselves and the team,
as one sport executive states:
Players, in addition to their work on the field, must
also do their part in integrating the team into the
community it represents. Whether it is through community
appearances for a sponsor or other community
activities, the goal is to have fans in the market associate
them and the team for which they play to positive
community activities. (Hamilton, 2004, p. 82)

Given the tremendous scrutiny professional sport
teams and athletes receive in the media, it is important
to make strong connections with the community. This
sentiment was emphasized by another sport executive:
We have to get out with our fans and interact with
them as much as possible. We have to get our players
out there . . . We have to get them into the community,
shaking hands and supporting charitable causes. This
contact is important because we are in an era where
unfortunately so much of the business of pro sports
has seeped into the front page of the paper, especially
the attention given to the salaries our players earn.
(Wallace, 2004, p. 38)
Professional athletes in major American sports are
unique, representing the brand of the team and league as
well as their own personal brand. The positive or negative
ramifications of nonsporting pursuits influence the value
of these brands placing utility in their appraisal. Given
the relatively recent emergence of sport philanthropy, “
. . . many (athletes) may not be aware of the value — to
both their communities and their teams — of exercising
philanthropy through carefully and strategically structured
foundations and programs” (Sports Philanthropy
Project, 2007).

Being good corprate citizens is imperative to the success of motoracing in Jamaica. It simply must be done. We see all our top athletes with good managers immediately start or affiliate themselves to charities. Clubs, Drivers/Marshals and promoters need to step up their game and be visible and active with charities, and show they care about the surrounding communities. I think at least 60% of your spectator base should be from the local track /venue  at any given time....

This could be the starting point to solving the riddle of club members with successful business to sponsor events /races.. [ponder]

Why wearing uniforms is important , for teams , organizers, marshals and official staff (merchandising). We now see pro sport stars have to wear only endorsed attire and suits in any interviews and photo opps...etc ... they even start to make fashion statments, which later may lead to own line of clothing, etc...

http://www.impact.ms/5-reasons-why-wearing-a-proper-uniform-is-important/

Social psychology is the study of individuals within a social context. According to psychologist Gordon Allport (1985), the interests of social psychology are centered on answering questions about why people think, feel, and act the way that they do as shaped by the actual, implied, or imaged presence of others. Combining these definitions of dress and social psychology along with the scope of topics addressed in social psychology, the social psychology of dress is concerned with answering questions about how an individual’s dress-related beliefs, attitudes, feelings, and behaviors are shaped by the influence of others. It is concerned with how an individual’s dress affects the behavior of self as well as the behavior of others. Individuals working in the area of the social psychology of dress are answering research questions such as:
What meanings do individuals link to dress?
How do people learn to dress their bodies?
How does an individual’s dress influence other’s perceptions and behaviors?
How does one’s dress impact self-perceptions and behaviors?
How is dress impacted by interaction with others? What factors account for individual differences in dress?
How does dress function within groups?

http://www.spiegel.de/international/zeitgeist/the-annals-of-sports-psychology-winners-wear-red-a-570918.html
Success has a color, and the color is red. In fact, a recent study confirms previous reports that athletes wearing red uniforms win competitions more often than opponents dressed in other colors. Researchers are now hard at work deciphering the mystery behind this puzzling phenomenon.

Now, from a purely marketing stand point,... this is your photo opp which may be placed in the national publication press and tv media...could this  picture be improved upon.... [ponder]
If yes..how? If no, why not?

Remember, your potential sponsor may just be out there observing how you are taking care of your current sponsors and how you represent their image and values....

Learning Why "Thank You" is so Vital

The Importance of Rewarding Your Team

Although the idea of rewarding workers beyond their pay and benefits package seems obvious, some leaders avoid the practice, perhaps because they feel that showing appreciation undermines their authority, perhaps because they want to avoid stirring up jealousy in other members of the team, perhaps because they feel they don't have the time to do it, or perhaps because they feel embarrassed praising people openly.

This is a shame, because these attitudes reduce their own performance, and all of these problems can or should be avoided. The most successful leaders are those who recognize and reward their team's efforts. This not only builds trust, but it strengthens loyalty as well. Turnover is often much lower in teams that have a strong bond with their leader, and this impacts a company's bottom line.

You should also remember that, for the most part, the world's talent pool is shrinking – mostly due to declining birth rates, which leads to an aging workforce. This means that it's becoming harder for organizations to find the people they need. Finding and keeping talented people is a key issue, and the companies that figure out how to do this now will likely be the ones that succeed far into the future. One of the best ways to keep these people is to make sure that their hard work is appreciated. If finding the few minutes needed to recognize people is a problem, just think how much time you'd have to spend replacing them!

Mismodify,
Thanks for wrongly advising the  young readers to the effect that the JRDC did not issue drivers licence. To make a deliberate, unfounded statement like that is wrong, you must first get the facts. before publishing. You are miss leading our young people. Do you know that circuit racing in a properly organised fashion started since 1970 in Jamaica with the advent of the CMRC series.  Please do not make fools of our young blood by getting them to think that Jamaica is behind the eight ball. You may not like this but what has happened and is happening in the Caribbean and continuing in a small way today has to do with the driving force in the seventies by Jamaica.
Here we are crying down in stead of trying to help in the development of the sport. This post should not be seen as criticizing but as providing accurate information

1) Makes the drivers the stars.... this will attract/build their fan base..which can only help them with their sponsorship exploits.

2) The comercial has a clear message ...speed, rivalry, motto/mantra "the heart of racing"...Catchy (interest grabbing) question in first 2 seconds....

3) call to action/ benefit ...engage in the experience / conversation by logging on .. all mention/links/ via any kind of marketing should lead back to the website !!!

4) series sponsor gets tagged at the end
