Dover Finale To Thrill

By Rory Daley Observer writer

THE final event on the Jamaica Race Drivers Club (JRDC) 2018 season, Heroes of Speed, will take place this holiday weekend — October 14 through 15 — at Dover Raceway in St Ann.

“We expect a great day of racing on Monday,” Peter McConnell, non-executive chairman of the JRDC, told the Jamaica Observer's Auto magazine.

Sunday's roster will see a full day of qualifying action, while a 15-event race card is planned for the following day.

McConnell said the club currently has 24 bikers registered and is expecting between 45 to 50 cars across all classes.

“Being the last race meet of the year, there are many people competing for their class championships and the overall driver's championship, so there will be a lot of great rivalries sure to entertain the fans,” he said.

The JRDC has implemented a host of changes to ensure a smooth and safe day of racing.

“The venue is well prepared. The grounds have been well groomed.”

On the safety side, security fencing and the track's curb walls have been repaired along with the installation of new tyre barriers. The start line has also been moved further up the front straight, increasing the space for those races with lots of cars and bikes.

“We have done a lot of planning and training with the timing team to improve the smooth running of the race,” he said.

McConnell explained that the aim is to stick to the race schedule and for the meet to be finished on time.

“This will not only keep the entertainment constantly flowing, but allow both competitors and fans to get home at a reasonable time,” he explained.

One of the men in the championship chase is current circuit racing champion Kyle Gregg. Gregg, who has dominated his Thundersport class this season, but is in a tight points fight for the 2018 overall driver's title.

“From the current situation, I have to win all my races to be overall champ for 2018, and, of course, it would feel good to take another championship,” Gregg said.

Given their success so far, Gregg said his team has planned minimum changes to his car for Monday. However, he is fully aware of the big news for the meet, the return of Doug “Hollywood” Gore.

“I know Doug is coming.”

Gore was suspended from racing, fined and ordered to do community service earlier this year for an incident at the 2018 Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championship Round 2 in Trinidad and Tobago on June 24.

“I'm cleared to race locally, this weekend,” Gore explained.

During his absence, Gore has been fine-tuning his Kia Rio race car.

“I've been testing, working out the brakes and handling as a lot has changed since the car got here. Once my full team is here, we'll start working on the other elements into race day.”

With no championship on the line, he plans to use the delayed circuit debut to showcase the new car's speed and durability.

“I'm looking forward to being on the track,” Gore added.

CIRCUIT RACING : DOUG GORE’S KIA-BEAST WILL BE UNLEASHED AT DOVER RACEWAY!
Author : Cecil Munroe   Gleaner On-Line Writer

Your life can change in an instant – Naomi Osaka. Read on the ‘Animal Farm’ – “Life is the lock – determination is the key” – Lightning Bolt! Will he strike again? I would not bet against it! His drive has no comparison – all wheel drive? No, Bolt-Lightning-drive!

At the Independence of Speed, like the rising sun, the IP and MP classes shone with life-giving brilliance. The on-track duels were evenly disbursed and like gladiators on the Roman stage, pride was defended with calculating aplomb.

The industrious discourse after the event, via a Dean Corrodus-led initiative – he has disappeared though – lol -  confirmed the inextinguishable passion for the sport.

KYLE ‘SPEEDY’ GREGG

Arguably, the most dramatic moments of the event were captured when Kyle ‘Speedy’ Gregg and TOTAL’s Andre Anderson locked horns. It was a territorial dispute which saw Andre cornering Kyle with a flurry of boost-filled jabs. The fans were stunned.

Psychotic, but joyous tendencies germinated. Pandemonium grew like an invasive weed.

Kyle ‘Speedy’ Gregg was not swayed though. He did not lose what Jeffery Panton has – Focus. Andre’s plots were rebuffed. Mechanical misfortune and a proven platform – Radical -slaughtered the Evo TOTALly!

Misery visited the insatiable fans. They were confused. Their needs were met. They were trapped in a strange room they were not used to occupying! They reluctantly departed from Alfred Chen’s gift, obese from the buffet-style, no-limit, exorbitant portions of adrenaline that appeared on the 1.6 wide plates at Dover Raceway!

DAVID ‘KING’ SUMMERBELL

At an event that saw no Doug ‘Hollywood’ Gore and no David ‘King’ Sumerbell, the excitement factor  was diminished in no way. Some would argue that it was enhanced because the spotlight remained steadfast on other drivers.

Truth be told though, an undeniable transformation occurs in the tempo of a Dover event, when David’s and Doug’s machines are fired and readied for the grid. No debate accepted.

Doug Gore, recently, while racing, dipped in his human bag – he erred. He complied to that which was required of him and thanks to, whoever you chose to thank, he returns to the track on Monday. Expect a euphoric surf-wave of deafening excitement at Dover on Monday.

Doug Gore will not be travelling alone though. Like a God of Asgard, he will be wielding a KIA-BEAST like no other. Competition pushes the envelope. Doug’s BEAST, if its potential is realised, may stomp on, crush, then shred the d… envelope!

I spoke to crew chief Raj Jadusingh. The machine successfully completed its testing and is in th e process of being readied for its debut at the 1.6. It will be at ground zero today – Saturday (Oct 14th).

Obviously, a lot is expected of both driver and machine. Will we be patient? NO!  We want to see the machine snorting, growling and roaring, full-tilt to corner one,volcano-like fire-eruptions exiting the ‘spout’ in its ventilated bonnet! . Will it leave Kyle and company in its vapor-trail?

Money well spent should guarantee cornering prowess that would belittle F1′s best. And its straight-line speed should silence Christian Von Koenigsegg!

Doug has an ace up his sleeve though. His nervous anticipation before the battle-cry will be subdued – he does not have to worry about David Summerbell. Lol!

Who will emerge as the real hero of speed? Andre Anderson? Kyle Gregg? Doug Gore? International star – ‘Frazz’ -  is back?

THE BEAST!

The wait is over! Watch the BEAST UNLEASHED – DOVER RACEWAY – MONDAY OCTOBER 15TH!

Heroes of Speed Wrap-up - Gregg is champ
BY RORY DALEY  Observer Writer

Friday, October 19, 2018

Chinese philosopher Mencius once said: “The best things in life come in threes.” And Kyle Gregg found this out at the end of the Jamaica Race Drivers Club's (JRDC) Heroes of Speed meet on October 15, Monday at Dover Raceway, St Ann.

The GB Energy Texaco-sponsored racing car driver was crowned 2018 Circuit racer, 2018 Thundersport class two (TS2) victor, and collected enough points to be the event champion as well.

“It feels great to be driver's champion again. It's a huge accomplishment for Texaco and myself,” Gregg told the Jamaica Observer's Auto magazine.

He went into the meet holding a slight points lead in the overall championship, facing competition from his former teammate Andre Anderson and a returning Douglas “Hollywood” Gore. He weathered it all for a clean sweep of all three of his TS2 races. It wasn't all clear sailing as he revealed that major engine problems affected the Radical RXC. However, with the final meet for 2018 behind him and the championship win in his hands, his team is already looking at 2019.

“Next year we will definitely be faster as the team will be doing some major upgrades,” Gregg explained.

In Thundersport class one, Demar Lee won two of the three, leaving the single win to Nigel Wilmot. The same occurred in Improved Production class one (IP1) as Kyle Mais led Patrick Ricketts two wins to one.

IP2 saw Matthew Lee do a clean sweep of the podium. Things were a bit more split in IP3 as Alan Gordon, Sheldon Morgan, and Sebastian Rae took a race win each. The joy of threes continued in Modified Production (MP) as in class one, class two and class three had Sara Misir, Peter Jaggon and Fraser McConnell complete hat-tricks in their respective classes.

In MP4, Jamie James won two with Xavia Murray taking the single victory left.

For the bikers, Kyle Reynolds took two wins from four races in the Motorcycle class A. The remaining two races went to both Gregg Cross and Mario Woon. Motorcycle class B was split two apiece between Danielle Davidson and Jason Ricketts.

Peter McConnell, chairman — JRDC, was happy with the overall staging of Heroes of Speed.

“It was excellent for the club. The organisation has been spot on. Our timing is working perfectly generating results that are out within five minutes after each race. The paddock area is in order, with only bikes and race car inside that area, ensuring free movement and no hold-ups between races,” he said.

McConnell added the JRDC was pleased with the quality of the racing, the crowd turnout and would be focusing their efforts of greater patron convenience next year. Issues like earlier distribution of passes to relieve gate congestion and reorganising the parking lot to allow easier entry and exit are on the table for 2018, he further explained.

HEROES OF SPEED : NICHOLAS ‘TAZZ’ BARNES AT WORK!

Author : Cecil Munroe   Gleaner On-Line Writer

The final event of the 2018 circuit racing season revved to an entertaining crescendo at circuit racing’s sacred 1.6 in St Ann, on Heroes Day, October 15, 2018. And as if to maintain the integrity of the event’s title – Heroes of Speed – the heavy-hitting drivers rolled out, wearing determination’s armor and flaunting victory’s shield.

DOUG ‘HOLLYWOOD’ GORE

There were numerous pleasant surprises for the fans in the paddock, chief of which was Doug Gore’s Kia-Beast/Tiger. As I have stated earlier, Doug’s machine is work in progress and as one would expect, hiccups will be included in its race-preparedness diet! Lol.

Confirmation of my view was blatantly waved by the Beast at the event. But, knowing ‘Hollywood’ and the nature of his gigantic ego, the Beast will undergo the requisite surgeries and a victory-grabbing predator will arise. Time.

JUNIOR ‘FLETTE’ BARNES

A lot unfolded at the event, but the most salient deserves individual attention. Nicholas Barnes is Junior ‘Flette’ Barnes’ son. He (Nicholas) could not escape a future wrapped around shifting gears even if such a clause was inserted in the script destiny crafted for him. Nicholas is well-known for the level at which he operates at Wet n Slide-type events.

Nicholas wields the same big stick at Dover – a canary-yellow AE86. Have you ever seen him at work?

 ‘TAZZ’ AT THE LIMIT!

Question – Who was driving the truck? [Lol] Not playing!

Ricardo Scott – happy you are ok!

CIRCUIT RACING : RACE OF THE YEAR – ANDRE ANDERSON IS #1!

Virgin Galactic is now on an outer space level. After 14 years, Sir Richard Branson and his team accomplished a moonstone (milestone). One of his toys successfully blasted into space. His rocket-powered jet kissed the Earth’s outer limits, soaring 80 km above the Earth’s surface. Space tourism – at a cost of a mere US 200 gs – boarding at a gate near you!

The race cars are silent, chilling in a designated spot while the inspired owner/driver contemplates the recipe of modifications to apply to ensure the annihilation of his pompous rivals. ” Next year a different ting!”, his mind shouts!

We are rapidly approaching the final lap of 2018 and unless you are a drag racer, your hopeful but challenging season has seen its final checkered flag. Jamaican motorsport is trapped in transition with some disciplines suffering from a plethora of maladies which would easily pummel ebola!

NDRC

The drag racing juggernaut – the NDRC – has adopted a curious volcanic classification. In 2018 we had a better chance at winning the super lotto than attending a NDRC organized event. We were fed a frustrating diet of uncertainty and ultimately, like empty promises, nothing of significance materialised. Is the organization Active, Dormant or Extinct?

JRDC

The JRDC should receive a medal for its commitment despite the atrocious financial sphere within which it operates. Unlike the NDRC, the JRDC is not homeless and as such it is my hope that astute minds will assemble, adopt a bold approach and employ the measures which will ensure that cash – like manna – will fall into the dominantly red bank account!

I will digress no further. The 1.6 in St. Ann, our Disneyland of speed, continues to honor its founder’s intent by delivering epic encounters. It has somehow slipped under the carpet, but, it will be stated here. In a year, in a season which saw NO DOUG vs DAVID, the quality of the on-track happenings was diminished in no way shape or form.

On the contrary, it can be argued that their absence left more than enough legroom for other competitors to jump on the big stage and claim their time in the spotlight.

Yes, Doug made an appearance, but he only confirmed what everyone knew – neither driver nor machine is fully equipped to battle the 1.6. Work in progress. We eagerly await the progress.

KYLE ‘SPEEDY’ GREGG

Kyle ‘Speedy’ Gregg needs no introduction. He is a tried, tested and proven champion. Some would argue that he is next in line to occupy the throne. Would the ‘King’ be comfortable with that? We will see what 2019 brings. Lol.

The team and the machine that Kyle has at his disposal, put him in a position of dominance even when Doug and David rev to the grid. If it reads B D GREGG and BROTHERS we all know – a nu play ting! So Kyle is the man!

Andre Anderson on the other hand, if we can allow honesty to enter the room, resides in a different outfit. Andre plays an integral role in the continuous development of the machine he brings to the grid.

Prior to the Heroes of Speed in October, I saw Andre on the ‘Chiney’ toll. He was in the passenger seat of the vehicle which had a trailer attached with the TOTAL-machine aboard. For reasons only the race car could explain, the passenger door (of the race car) released itself from its lock mechanism. Andre exited the vehicle and addressed the Popcaan-like (unruly) behaviour.

The machine was possibly nervous, justifiably frightened by the experience at the dyno and the  torture that it would endure to deliver its manic driver’s command -  stifle and terminate Kyle! Lol.

If you were a patron, you would have seen it. If you were not present, you would have heard about it. If you watched it, you can watch it again. In Race #2, at the Heroes of Speed, held in October at Dover Raceway, Andre Anderson and his TOTAL machine led the euphoric affair. It was an uber-anticipated bout – it was the Thriller in Manilla – it was The Avengers Infinity Stones! Did I say it was epic? Well it was!

Andre Anderson and Kyle Gregg fought relentlessly. It was a battle which forced Kyle to recalculate and access an inner being. Andre had him on power-sapping ropes, torturing the TEXACO-Radical and coercing it to accept defeat.

But, Kyle knew that defeat was not on the menu. Like a panther stalking its prey he remained patient. And then it happened. Pandemonium – like C4 – exploded! What happened?

It is my view that the winner of the Race of the Year is the Thundersport Race #2  – Heroes of Speed (October 2018).

Due to the vibrant expressions of my Jamaican brothers and sisters I am shackled and unable to present the video of the race here. But, I can do the next best thing…lol. Please see 876 Streets’ YouTube channel – Thundersport Race #2 Heroes of Speed October 15, 2018.

Which race was your race of the year?

We need to find another Hilary Jardine to keep motor racing alive. The Mr.noitall doing little or nothing to promote the sport. TALK YES.
